Juicing basics Part 1: The Equipment

The first thing you are going to need is a juicer. Of the basic steps in getting started on your journey, this is the most important. You’ll have three specific options. The first is a centrifugal juicer. This type of machine is easy to use and it’s typically fairly affordable. They are probably the most common design in the market and many, not just us, consider them perfect for the beginner.

The next option is a masticating juicer, also commonly referred to as single gear. These machines process the produce slower and therefore at lower heat, which helps preserve delicate nutrients in the resulting nectar. Furthermore, this type of system produce a yield which most centrifugals are unable to replicate.

Lastly we should mention triturating juicing machines, also known as twin gear juicers. These are widely claimed to generate the best juices and wring the most sap out of the fruits and vegetables you put in them. They are more advanced in their options and as a result cost a lot more than the other types we have mentioned previously. This is a tool you should probably only consider when you have firmly established that you are going to commit to this lifestyle.

Juicing Basics Part 2: How to Maximize the Benefits of Juices

It is important to know how to drink your produce. It’s important to consume your juice when it’s fresh but at the same time, you should not gulp it down too quickly. The longer juices sit, the more oxidation happens. This is a term you are probably more used to hearing in association with rust. But in this case, it refers to the gradual depletion of vital minerals and vitamins – the longer the liquid sits, the more of the good stuff it looses. As a result, it’s important to drink juices in one sitting. However, if you drink too quickly, you are inhibiting your body from the proper absorption of these vital minerals and nutrients.

It is worth noting that there is a lot more to this oxidization stuff. For instance, you can fight it in case you simply don’t have the luxury of being able to consume your elixir straight out of the machine. The main culprit when it comes to oxidization is good old oxygen, it causes this to happen. So one way of slowing down this process would be to store produce in airtight containers. This is handy if you want to make a batch in the morning and take some of it to work. But our advise would be to drink what you juice on the day, for minimum loss of quality and maximum benefit for you.
